The 1, however can be played in four ways: 1) 7 to 6 producing this position:  With this play Red would be gammoned if he rolled a 3+4! 2) 5 to 4 producing this position:  Red is gammoned here as well, if he rolls a 3+5 next! 3) 6 to 5 producing this position:  Here Red fails to bear off a checker on his next turn with a roll of double 3. 4) 2 to 1 producing this position:  Surprisingly, here Red will bear off a man next turn no matter what he rolls!
